about southern maryland canine academy

Southern Maryland Canine Academy is a Veteran owned and operated business. Our goal is to develop owners into capable and confident dog handlers through developing skills and proper technique to address the behavioral and obedience side of dog training. With the guidance of an experienced dog trainer who has a full arsenal of different techniques we will create a fully loaded tool belt with an understanding of the “why” for our clients. Then as we watch our dogs obedience transforms before our eyes the owners become confident in their abilities to teach their own dogs. This comes with learning how to communicate our expectations and structure to our dogs. While all of this is happening we will be simultaneously developing a much stronger relationship and bond with our beloved pets.

About me

Hi, I’m nick young.

I am the owner and sole employee of Southern Maryland Canine Academy. This journey started for me five years ago when I got my first dog. This is where my passion for training dogs began. I enjoyed the challenge of teaching and communicating with an animal. After joining the Navy I was shipped across the country and along the way I learned the skills of teaching people. I learned to simplify and break down complicated ideas into small bite sized pieces that anyone, no matter their age or prior experience can understand.
While in the Navy I got married. The woman I was lucky enough to marry had several dogs. We often found ourselves being frustrated and limited in where we can bring our dogs in our active lifestyle. Their lack of obedience and explosive reactivity hindered us from enjoying a social life with them. This pushed me to learn the psychology of dogs and why the reactivity is happening and teach myself the skill to correct it. I immediately fell back into love with training dogs. This passion drove me to find a nearby trainer who mentored me and pushed me to find my own philosophies and moral code in training. After handling hundreds of leashes and spending countless hours correcting unwanted behaviors and teaching desired behaviors, I moved  back to southern Maryland and opened my own business. My goal with this business is to offer a different experience than found anywhere else. I wanted to teach dog owners how to be confident and skillful dog handlers. Since opening my business I have seen nothing but success with my clients. I am beyond excited at the opportunity to help more people and their dogs.
